wish list
There’s a few things that have been on my mind for a while. So, here’s my wish list:
* Whenever I buy something I like to have a folder in my inventory named STORE-ITEM with an LM to the store and a picture of the item. It’s boring to have to unpack things. I have available prims in my land to do it but not everyone has them. I remember the days when I had to find a sandbox to unpack a box I just bought. If you have to sell your items in a box, please make it as low prim as possible. I like to click a poster and that poster immediately places a folder in my inventory.
This applies to everything. I have a good memory but it’s difficult to remember everything I have. Most of the items in my skins, hair, shoes and jewelry folders don’t have pictures. It doesn’t cost a L$ to the content creators since you already have the picture in-world.
* I like options in outfits which is the same to say that I like different layers for an outfit. But there is a difference between all necessary layers and all layers possible. Some outfits have all the possible layers and we only need some of those layers. Needless to say these unnecessary layers will make our inventories look huge with layers never to be worn. Also, this is will save some L$ for content creators. Instead of upload *all* the layers, make sure to put only the necessary amount of layers.
* Permissions can be a sensitive matter but we need mod prims or if you prefer to sell your prim creations with no mod permissions, at least, insert a script to resize them. But if your prims are mod, please make them also copy. As for permissions in clothing, some people prefer to sell no copy and others no transfer. Why not have the two options available? Again, there are scripts for this.
* Some people use the LoopRez system to make prim skirts. The funny thing about this system is that the prim you made will never have your name as the creator which isn’t good. The creator will always be the creator of the LoopRez system. I have nothing against Ged Larsen but I must say that the things created by that system are the most difficult to adjust I have ever seen in SL. After spending a while adjusting them they still look bad.
Vint Falken has a much better prim skirt builder where your name will show up as the creator of the item. Also, the prims make with this are easily mod.
* You don’t need to spend money on those scripts to make your prim skirts behave while you sit. Gwyneth Llewelyn has that script available for free. She also has the heels sounds script available for free. I am sure that the paid scripts must have options that this one doesn’t have. First, try a free one and then if you are not totally happy with the option go for a paid one.
It is nice to have a skirt with that script. The thing is if you are maving a skirt with this script please put in the folder one skirt without it. It is really hard to take pictures at skirts that have their own life.
* Whenever I see an outfit that has a collar or a nice necklace I always wish that I can buy it with both spine and chest attachment points. The designer would only have to add another item to the folder and named it whatever-spine and whatever-chest. I asked Maria Gherardi to do it with one of her latest releases and she told me that she never thought of it. Antonia Marat has both options in her creations and I love having that option. But I don’t see many jewelry creators having this option in their creations. This is also true for belts and neko tails and any other prims that could be attached to another point. But, please, don’t make prim skirts attached to the chest or earrings (attached to each other) that attached to the nose. The prim skirts attach to the stomach or pelvis. The eyelashes attach to nose. For eyelashes there’s also the option of eyeball attachment. And there’s also the pecs which I don’t really know what it is but I don’t see much stuff attached there.
Maybe we could make this a open letter to all content creators in SL…

I use the Skirt Sitter script by Cale Vinson in the skirts I make, and I like it. You can touch the skirt to temporarily turn off the “sitting” mode, which is useful when you’re on a poseball or stand for photos.

I agree with you on these things. The boxes for my shop are 2 prim I believe, we always include the photo used for the vendor, a landmark and a notecard with either instructions or a friendly hello. I also started putting resizer scripts into my items mainly because I had an issue with a pair of my boots being copied and having the scripts allows me to make my items no mod and allows them to be transfer now. I have a belt that I made 2 attach points for so that anyone with a tail wouldn’t have to give it up and soon I will be putting out neko parts that will include a tail with 2 attach points to accomodate the fashions out there that don’t take that into consideration.

Great list, Ana! But I do want to point out that with the Professional Loop Rez system you certainly CAN make yourself the creator of the finished product, you just have to do a bit of set-up when you first get the system. Also not sure what you mean by the skirts are harder/worse to mod than Vint’s skirt maker, I’ve never found that personally, but now I’m going to do some testing

It’s funny because if I had a wish list it would be that designers included MORE layers with their clothes. Sometimes I wear tattoos and sometimes I don’t. Some things I like to layer and it can be hard when I see an top in my inetory and and want to wear it with a jacket…only I can’t because they are both jacket layers or the both shirt layers. Or I want to wear the tattoos and can’t because something is only underwear layer or whatever.
But the differnet attachment points is right on. I wear wings and I’m forever running across dresses that attach to the spine or a necklace that attaches there and then I have to choose which to wear, and the wings generally win.

Hi - First I think your list is very comprehensive. Second I wanted to let you know that for whatever reason your form has WHITE text in YELLOW form filed (slots) for me so I can’t see any info I type in until I get to the comments.
On the Loop Rez, my version (doing NOTHING at all) comes up with “unknown” as the designer in the properties but of course if you do an inspect it is ALL my name an no one else is mentioned.
Also — on the layers, fewer layers doesn’t save the designers any money, just time. For example a blouse (short one that doesn’t go below the waist) could be an undershirt, shirt or jacket. There is only ONE texture needed and you make the different layers in the appearance editor. Sometimes people want a LONG top to be an undershirt, you can only do that by making an undershirt AND underpants and wearing both, otherwise you upload those two separate graphics and combine them in the JACKET layer. Know this is something most folks don’t do, but I think it is important for customers to understand a bit more how it works.
I think the different top layers are mostly for the tattoo folks as mentioned above and of course the pants as undies are for boots especially (wink).
There is a way to attach two different prims to the same point now that we have a newer client. I saw a long post on that but didn’t bookmark as I am not a big jewelry or wing gal. A search might come up with it. It changed I believe with Windlight version being incorporated so most everyone should have it now unless you are using OnRez.

I am not a content creator and never tried to built a prim skirt. This is my opinion based on the items I have in my inventory.

Every skirt I have where the creator name is Ged Larsen, I know I am in trouble. I mod the skirts and they still don’t look good. It could be me but it’s weird when I mod other skirts and they look good. I also have issues with prims from Armidi…

I wanted to make a difference between necessary/usable layers and all existent layers. I don’t need a jacket in pants layers, for example, except is it is a long jacket. I agree with more layers options. I need them too but some creators upload ALL the layers and some of them are unnecessary.

My blog is optimized to Firefox and the color for links is a yellowish green, the text content is in gray and the background in dark gray. It is also optimized for 1024×768 and 1280×1024 resolutions. This is how it looks (to me):

I think it’s strange when I see an item that says unknown as the creator and I don’t inspect all of my items. And I also find it odd when the prims in an outfit are from different creators…
About the layers, I just want people to understand the difference between necessary and unnecessary layers. The different layers are great for fashionistas. They are great to mix and match!
Another example: if you are making a belt in layers, you certainly don’t need to make it in undershirt layer but for a necklace made with the layers all layers are ok.
The post you are mentioned was written by Milla Michinaga but I think that was a flaw in the RC release. I am using the latest SL client as I do always {(Second Life 1.19.1 (4) Apr 2 2008 11:59:37 (Second Life Release)}. I know we can link prims and attach linked prims to a point. I can link two necklaces that have the same attachment point and use it but I would loose hours doing that. It would be more practical if those two necklaces had different attachment options.

ACtually I’m using the latest firefox and I get white type on yellow background for name and email. I took me several times both posts to get right and I’m still not sure I have it right.
And my post was rejected for invalid email address due to typos I couldn’t not see.

Comment moderation is active for first time a person writes a comment here. That’s the only security (besides Askimet) I have on. The comment moderation validates your email and it must be in a valid format. This means that if you always use the same email your comments won’t have to wait for approval.
I only delete spam though…
I am really worried about this comment issue. Is this happening to everyone? PWEASE, let me know.

Oh my, your list and mine are very similar. Just today I wrote a plea for spine and chest options for prim attachments. I want mod system skirts for the stupid disappearing skirt glitch. I want more layers - particularly for tops.

A jacket won’t be made in pants layer unless it used the lower template (thus being a long jacket)… Please point me to the store where a creator made a pants layer for a jacket that only used the upper part of the template. I’m pretty sure no creator has bother to make pants that are just a blank texture. (I did once but i was just to trick Stephen Bentham into being pantsless).
I’ve never come across an unnecessary clothing layer, I use them all when getting dressed… the only reason people don’t use them is when they’re wearing an outfit straight from the box… and who would do that?

Surely more than one version of the same attachment is unnecessary? It’s not difficult to change where an object attaches to. I do this all the time.
But I have to agree about folders, images and landmarks. I spend ages trying on stuff from my inventory just to remind myself what it looks like, when an image could save me time.
And the request to include a landmark is in the interests of a store. People are always asking me where I bought whatever it is I’m wearing at the time, and if there isn’t a landmark in the right folder then I usually can’t tell them. And that’s one less sale for the store.

I use both prim skirt builders, depending on the look I am trying to achieve. I have the commerical Ged Larsen skirt builder, and this lets me set the creator name to mine. Although I mostly use Vint’s skirt builder.
I sell items in folders, unless it is from a multi-vendor or one that contains a profit share script (these are boxed in a single prim).
All my folders contain a LM, Photo and a thank you card, containg more LM’s and blog address.
All prims are mod.
Permissions are no copy, trans.
Started adding more layers because of costomer requests. Extra layers cost time not L$. I just delete layers I don’t use, or put them into a sub-folder.

Well this is a good wish list, though I don’t agree with one of your wishes!
I always put all possible layers in my stuff. I think it is necessary! I buy clothes at others stores and sometimes I get disappointed because I can’t use the outfit the way I want or I can’t mix it with other outfits because the layers I need are not there!
In my store I always sell stuff inside a folder with a notecard that includes my contact and my LM so people can easily get in touch with me! Pictures are always inside the LM. Items are no mod/cop/no trans, except for prims. Layers, lots of them - all I can give! For gifts, there are store cards in the store.
Now I am wondering… for example, a babydoll, where do you prefer to attach it and do you really think it is necessary more than one attatchment point?

I don’t need the tucket version of a sweater in the pants layers. For a sweater with tucked and untucked options, it’s cool to have jacket (untucked), shirt, undershirt and underpants for tucked version. The pants layer is not necessary here. And, believe me, I saw it…
I am not saying I don’t want more layers in an outfit. I am just saying that some of the layers aren’t necessary - in my opinion.
There are people that wear an outfit straight from the box. They use the replace outfit or add to outfit option.

In my wish list I wish for a necklace in spine in chest attachment points. I know I can change the place where it attaches but if the necklaces isn’t copy I am always afraid to do it. I know it can be done but since this a wish list, I am saying what I would like to see. Besides, I have some necklaces with all options I like to see: silver/ gold both for spine and chest.

All layers are cool but I am finding more and more interesting only to see the necessary layers to an outfit and not all the possible options. But it’s my opinion and I knew, when I wrote it, that a lot of people would disagree. Roxette suggests subfolders for the remaining layers…
A babydoll doesn’t need several attachment points, in my opinion, as long as it lets me wear necklaces.

But when they arent copy, its a danger to edit them, specially for some people who can’t even edit prim lashes (I know its easy! I know, I just can’t do it!)

I’m not the only one with issues with the prims from Armidi! The single prim skirt panels NEVER fit well, no matter what I do to them. I had hoped the sculpty prims would be better, but they are very oddly shaped, and stick out in weird places. I had higher hopes for a store with this kind of reputation and level of quality.
Btw, it’s not a big deal, but I couldn’t see what I typed in the email field either… white type on yellow background didn’t show up for me.

On the prim skirt issue and having the “creator name” be the actual creator - if anyone needs to they just have to read his FAQ or instruction to be able to change it - it’s a permissions thing and all one need to is change out the center prim and replace it. IDK the details but it really isn’t hard. So those who are having issues should see this: http://slged.blogspot.com/2007/01/looprez-deluxe-commercial-edition.html.
Modifying the prim skirt - It depends on your avi shape really. I’m not sure how to come up with a solution but I definitely will keep working on it. Also keep in mind that if the creator ends up creating more prims or items with different attachment points that will equate to higher prices. You can always try making a copy and attaching it to the desired area yourself. I know it’s a pain, but in the end it may teach you to be self reliant.
The script for skirts only works in areas that allow scripts - which is fine when you are in a sandbox or at your land but you step onto someones sim that has scripts disabled - well the skirt will act weird all over again. Also - you can buy a customer version of those scripts and put it in your prims that way.
All layers all the time - why? For people who like to mix and match and for those who wear tatoos. It’s simple enough to delete unwanted files really.
I use vendors for my items hence they have to be packaged. Why vendors? because I have several versions of one item (56 Roman Halters, 38 Denim Mini’s, 42 Capris etc). If I made a one-prim sign for every item I would run out of prim space in about an hour. I only offer those iterations as a consideration and it is part of the brand. I mean really - how many other stores offer that many colors? And I think it’s unfair to only offer fatpacks - people with limited $L should be able to look good too!
As for the copy/mod or mod/trans - IDK what to do. I have recently changed over to copy/mod as it seems people like/need that option to make outfits. Mod/trans is good though for people buying gifts or those who wish to give away old items or if they purchased something that bonks out and need a new one (exchanging it for new). I personally think mod/trans is probably more like a RL purchase but this is a digital world so - mod/copy makes sense. Doing both versions costs a lot in time and really I have tried it and it seems to confuse people. I will have to think about it and maybe get my vendor updated to include that option. But what a nightmare if I make more than one color or version of an outfit.

I was chatting with a new designer and she had all sorts of doubts. I told her that most creators sell their prims mod/no transfer and the rest, usually, no transfer or no copy and sometimes no mod too. I also told her that most creators are doing all layers for their outfits. The thing is: some new content creators don’t know what customers think/need/want and I thought it would be a good idea to write up some of my thoughts.

It’s true: you are one of the designers that has the widest variety of colors per item. It would be a nightmare to change all your vendors. But your boxes aren’t high prim and they have everything people need.

The pants layer on a sweater would be so you can wear it untucked with pants on the underwear layer and still wear something on the jacket layer… like a necklace or a coat?
I know people wear stuff out of the box but I know a lot of people (me included when I was still working for myself) put the extra layers in a separate box.

I especially love the folder idea. I can never remember the name of an outfit, but I always remember the designer/store…put that in the nomenclature and I am inventory heaven. It also insures that I will wear the item often as I just don’t have the patience to go hunting for that fabulous outfit that has a random name. (Yes, I realize my inventory is a mess and I should put things away as I buy them, but I don’t…so help a girl out, please?)
I, too, was having difficulty with the comments section while on my work PC (using FF3 on Windows XP), but now, at home and using FF2 and Vista, I have no issues.
