wish list . take 2

Posted on January 8, 2009 by Ana Lutetia | 41 Comments

This is my second wish list blogged and some of the things I first noticed haven’t changed inSL. That’s why my wish list keeps growing. Also, some content creators told me that my first post was interesting because they didn’t know what their costumers wanted.
The items covered in my wish list are:
→ name your folders correctly and add pictures of the items
→ folders, not boxes
→ layers
→ scripts and permissions
→ prim skirt builder
→ more attachment options
→ flexi sculpties
→ more use of the system layers
→ credits in fashion blogging
→ food
→ gloves and scarves
→ websites/blogs for stores
→ nice retro rollerboots

name your folders correctly and add pictures of the items → Whenever I buy something I like to have a folder in my inventory named STORE-ITEM with an LM to the store and a picture of the item. This applies to everything. I have a good memory but it’s difficult to remember everything I have. Most of the items in my skins, hair, shoes and jewelry folders don’t have pictures. It doesn’t cost a L$ to the content creators since you already have the picture in-world.

folders, not boxes → It’s boring to have to unpack things. I have available prims in my land to do it but not everyone has them. I remember the days when I had to find a sandbox to unpack a box I just bought. If you have to sell your items in a box, please make it as low prim as possible. I like to click a poster and that poster immediately places a folder in my inventory.

layers → The debate about layers always ends up with the majority saying that they want more layers and I include myself in that group. I want more layer options for tops and bottoms. Actually, I want all layers but I would be quite happy with more than one layer inside a folder. For tops, I need undershirt, shirt, jacket and, sometimes, underpants (for tucked option or for shirt extension). For bottoms, I need pants and underpants layers.
Some designers don’t offer all layers or more layer options because themselves don’t like to get all layers when they shop. So, since they don’t like their inventories spammed, they simply don’t create their pieces in more layers. Other creators released their outfits with one look in mind and thinking of that they don’t see the point of adding more layers. However, my question is: did you asked your costumers opinion about this? Isn’t what your costumers want that truly matters?
The more layers thing is no more than our desire of having more options with our inventories.

scripts and permissions → Whenever a script is added to a prim, I would love to find a version without script inside the folder. Also, if you add a resizer script to your pieces, please keep the prim mod or add a version of the prim tinted in white.
Not always the script you added to a prim is useful to the end user, aka, your costumer. Our the person doesn’t know how to make the best of it. If you add another version of the item without the script, people will be happy to see more options inside a folder and will make the most of what you are selling.
I personally love the resizer script (which can be acquired for free) but not everyone likes to use it. Some people are used to edit their prims in the old fashionable way and prefer not to use the script. Nevertheless, the script is extremely easy to use and I prefer it. However, I need another version of the prim inside the folder. I will need the prim not tinted.
Since the Release Candidate 1.22 was released, I have been using it. In this viewer the issue that made content creators tint their prims to greyishsih is solved – VWR-8012 :: Gray shading all over clothing and avatars in world since the Windlight roll out. This was a known issue that was happening since version 1.19.1.4.
Oh… and BTW, no mod hair is simply plain dumb!

prim skirt builder → I am not particularly fond of the prim skirts built with the LoopRez. Usually, after a lot of editing the prim skirts never look good. Maybe it’s me but I do prefer the skirts built with another prim skirt builder.
You can pick up the Vintskirtbuilder in my blog HQ inSL (for free, of course). This is a great tool to build prim skirts and also a great thing for us to edit the skirts to fit our shape.

attachment options → I would love to have more attachments options – VWR-489 :: Multiple attachments per attachment point – but since we don’t have, I would like that my jewellery, collars, skirts, belts would have more than one attachment point. I hate having a skirt on, click wear on a necklace and notice that my skirt is gone because they were both created to attach to the spine, for example. My solution to this would be having, inside the folder, the same item with different attachment options.

flexible sculpties → Who doesn’t want the sculpted prims to flow…? VWR-9203 :: Flexible Sculpted Prims

more use of the system layers → I like the necklaces I have that are on the jacket layer even though I prefer when the necklaces in system layers are available in more layers. The point is there aren’t that many designers that create necklaces, bracelets or belts in system layers. I know that bracelets in the gloves, shirt or jacket layer would be same for both arms but I don’t mind at all using similar bracelets in both arms.

credits → When I read fashion blogs, I want to see a list of everything used. If you are doing a fashion post, that is. I like to know every single thing you are using, from hair to poses and even locations (if you are not inside your studio). I am not asking for a SLurl list in each post, i am just saying that I want to easily find that special item that caught my eye.

food → We definitely need more food… so we can gain some weight. I am not going into the discussion about thin avatars. Actually, my avatar has more weight than my RL self.
The food I need are cute things to attach to the mouth.

gloves and scarves → There isn’t such thing as too many gloves or too many scarves inSL. What I haven’t found yet are wool gloves…

websites/blogs for stores → I wished that more creators would have websites or blogs with their latest releases. I prefer to see the news about new releases in a website or blog than notices in-world. The new Armidi shopping website is great and we can even create our own Armidi wishlist. I am not asking that everyone has such kind of website but a simple and free weblog would be quite nice.
(BTW, my RL BDay is in 2 weeks… just saying!)
If you don’t want to create a blog, you can ask Sasy to be added to the What’s New in Second Life blog.

nice retro rollerboots → oh… and I need to find a nice retro rollerboots for Kitty.

Oh my god I love you!

And the rest of the stuff is very cool too! *awaits boots*

Another great and comprehensive list. Now that you have written it though, one more thing comes to mind. Mittens!!! IT would be fun to have some mittens instead of only gloves. For serious snowman and snowfort building you need mittens as gloves won’t keep your hands warm enough.

I completely agree, and would add one thing regarding attachment points: for things that could be attached to either of two or more locations (chest or spine, pelvis or stomach or spine, etc.) please include that in the name of the primset. That way I can see *before* I put something on that it’s going to knock something else off.

I usually need two versions of turtleneck collar attachments, for example. If the designer doesn’t provide both and I can make a copy, I always append “(chest)” and “(spine)” to the names of those objects.

This is a fabulous list, although the thought of flexi sculpties kind of worry me. Just imagining what might happen to a flexi gone wrong, but yes some of those beautiful sculpted skirts gone flexi would be amazing. Oh and can I say yes yes YES to photos with items! Please, if everyone only listened to Ana ;)

I agree with so many things on this list. A few things I wish I could do on it and cant because my items are transferable (ie: offer multiple attachment points/untinted versions) but I do try to do as many layers as possible and color options. I adore Vint’s skirtmaker (it saved my poor wrists)And I may get to work on wool gloves this morning. Naming folders and clothing is one of my shopping pet peeves. If you name the folder something…it’s fantastic to have the clothes inside have the same name or a keyword from that name in them. And whyyyy don’t people put a LM and pic in their folder? I just don’t understand. A great designer once advised me, get your LM in as many inventories as possible so I’m passing that on! A great read thanks Ana!

Kitty Lalonde → *winks to Kitty*

    Cajsa Lilliehook → *loves mittens*

    Roisin Hotaling → *nods*

Dinalya → *hugs my new friend* I was thinking you got fed up of my blog, ‘cos I didn’t saw you commenting…
Unfortunely, I don’t have that many readers and the ones I have agree with me. So, the content creators that should be reading this won’t know. :|

Hurrah for this wishlist! I wanted to especially thank you for bringing up the loop-rez skirts. I was digging around in my inventory and found some old favourites but became so utterly frustrated with these skirts!

Also, flexible sculpties would be amazing. When it comes to things like skirts and dresses I prefer sculpty, Nic prefers flexi (on me not him lol), so this sounds like the ultimate compromise.

WOOOT agreeing with every word you say! And taking some advice too, about the multiple attachement options. Will try to include that in every pack aswell, i myself love it too when i have those options.

Sculpties need to go flexi PERIOD. lol

Dahlia Eilde → I think flexi sculpties are going to be the next big thing.

SySy → I know that my first wish list post made some people aware of what costumers wanted because I pointed out things that they never thought. <3

I’ll agree with everything except the food in the mouth bit. maybe its just me, but I hate pics where there’s some big dumb piece of food dangling from the model’s mouth. Its the goofiest trend in SL, IMO.

Also, as far as layers go, one layer I absolutely hate is shirt bottom on the pants layer. More than once I’ve been trying on a new outfit, see the pants icon and think “sweet, this comes with pants too!” And voila! I’m standing in the store in nothing but a long shirt!

  11. Ana Lutetia
    January 8th, 2009 @ 22:33

Annyka → I am sure is not only you that don’t like the food in the mouth trend but if you find anything around, let me know please. ;)
wooo – pics or it didn’t happen! Seriously, it would nice if the pants layers were correctly named, like shirt extension because that way you wouldn’t stand half naked in the store.

  12. Tarissa
    January 8th, 2009 @ 22:35

Yeah! As a fashion controlled idiot I have to say: Where are the gloves we demanded months ago? Where? *shakes fist*

  13. Sasy Scarborough
    January 8th, 2009 @ 23:45

The shirt extension on a pants layer is much needed especially for guys, that being said it means having to also do pants on the underpants layer, that is a must with the amount of fantastic boots in SL, but lots of guys only wear boots and if the pants are low rise and the shirt isnt done with an extension on pants layer it limits how much you can wear.

This is from my many hours going all over SL with Fia to check as many guys stores for this option and there are only a few that do either.

Also a big must is the blogs for stores, not only does it make things easier to see, but keyword searching is amazing in google the things you can find, why not have your store be one of them, amazes me how many don’t do it.

There are some sculpted mittens available full perms by Ethan Gregg and really inexpensive, why don’t you get some and make them as pretty as you want and give them as gifts :)

    Great list Ana

Hehe, thank you for these wish lists, Ana :)
Your last one enlightened me about the pictures in folders (which I never thought of, cause I am busy enough trying to keep track of boxes filling when I am setting stuff for sale).

I agree with you on the multiple attachments, skirts non-scripted, and more layer options… although, like Ivey said, for those of us who sell transferable items, this might mean selling more copies of the same outfit (complete outfit, if I also had to add 2 different skirts, or 2 possible attachments) at the price of one… cause raising the prices for that doesn’t seem too nice.

… so, until I find a way to fix that last thing, thanks for the tips ;)

    *hugs*

This time I agree with everything!

I try to do it myself, in my store, but there’s always something we miss! This post are great for designers to know what you – costumers – want!

I only have to say that for fat packs I always need to put stuff into boxes! how would you prefer it to be organized?

stuff I wish the less-experienced designers would change:

    a. no-modify system skirt layers. (I’m bigger in the hips and thighs than many models, and I don’t want to alter my shape to look like a stick-figure to fit into that narrow skirt.)

    b. sculpty attachments that are no-modify and without resize scripts. argh.

    c. parts of a dress on unexpected layers. (For example, I have one lovely dress whose top is only on the undershirt layer. Why??)

    d. belts and skirt-waistbands made with oval shapes that need more work (its a pet peeve but I have some dresses that I never wear because I don’t like the waist. Naming no names … but I think a FEW designers throw on a quick belt just to hide the seam between the system shirt/jacket and the prim skirt. It’s a tricky area yes?

(If you can do a good job at the waist and around the chest oddities I salute you!)

TY for taking on this subject AnaLu

I just remember another thing… that has nothing to do with the wish list, but it might be something worth to talk and that I would like some feedback… it’s about the ads!

What is the best type of ad! Hanging clothes? A picture of a model wearing it? Does it needs to say what is inside the folder? … well that kind of stuff!

    Thanks you :)

  18. Ana Lutetia
    January 9th, 2009 @ 01:15

Tarissa → dunno! *winks* Actually, I have seen more and more gloves around.

Sasy Scarborough → I have another suggestion for guys wearing boots: pants extension in the jacket layer as Nicholas Shaftoe pointed it out over two years ago.

Clio → My personal pet peeve is about the skins. I don’t have any pics in the original packs of the skins. :(

Annah Whitfield → You always have done an amazing job thinking about the costumers. No suggestion for fatpacks…. but what if you put everything in the prim vendor? That way as we click we would have a big folder with everything in it. My pet peeve is having boxes for only a sweater…
I like the hanging clothes thing. They look nice but we can’t see how it looks on an avatar. I have two suggestions for this: the hanging clothes and a picture wearing it or demos!

Serene Fairey → I have hips but I am not thin and I mod my shape to look good in system skirts. I don’t think there is a way around this. We will have to change our shape a tiny bit to look good in system skirts. Also, don’t forget there’s an issue still unsolved about layers reported in jira VWR-9530 by Siddean Munro. And this is only one more reason to add more layers to outfits.

  19. Serene Fairey
    January 9th, 2009 @ 01:56

I do have a SLIGHTLY smaller hip/butt version of my shape to wear with system skirts, but I have had to throw away no-mod system skirts because I have muscular thighs that acually show thru the skirt when I stand in some poses. If the skirt doesn’t have a strong pattern I can make a pair of glitchpants the same color to prevent my skincolor flashing out but I shouldn’t need to.

  20. Ana Lutetia
    January 9th, 2009 @ 02:12

Oh… got it! And you remind me of another thing: skirts (prim and system) without glitch pants – I don’t get it.

On the subject of skirts, I have a tiny issue that maybe someone could someday tend to. The mini skirt prim. I hate them. Hate is a strong word, but it fits! They always look so good in whatever picture I am looking at that I trick myself into thinking I can adjust it enough to look good. I cannot. It would be extremely nice if someone maybe made poses perfect for that single prim mini skirt or if designers offered the system skirt as an alternative for those of us (waves hands in the air) who for some unknown reason cannot get them to set just right. As a side note, I have a ‘thicker’ av, even been called fat before…maybe that’s my problem, I just love the way they look…..on anyone but me! =(

  23. Nieve Thor
    January 9th, 2009 @ 07:53

Ana..I always love your blog. This post truely shone what most consumer feel.

I still hate no copy clothes (unless I want to gift it to someone). I love to mix and match my look and save the best look into a folder. Without the no copy permission makes me hard to find back where the heck my lovely shoes/necklace went.

I need to check out Vintskirtbuilder. I already have LoopRez. It’s good but it doesn’t give me what I wanted. (Am I right to be picky). I bought it but after few try it still stay in my inventory collecting pixel dust. To adjust it is a total nightmare to me. If only the system skirt sculted so perfectly as I want it..i think all my nightmare will be solve. So the next best thing is to vote for the flexi sculpt.

Great post, Ana. Agree with almost everything, specially the pics on the files. I simply do not wear a lot of stuff because I have no time to dress and undress, looking for that particular item, so in the end I tend to use mostly clothes I can see beforehand.

As for the only item I desagree, is the food-in-the-mouth thing. I understand and respect lol, of course, but the problem with that kind of fashion is that some things may look fun, but others look really weird(and I’ve seen 90% of fashion blogs with their pics absolutely ruined by that).

  25. Annah Whitfield
    January 9th, 2009 @ 14:39

Thanks Ana! I really try to think of my costumers when preparing things… maybe that’s why I take so long to release something new!

About the fatpacks – there is no way of putting everything in one folder! It will not load, and everytime I try to put a fatpack for sale in just one folder, it says that I have too many items inside! My solution was to slipt the fatpacks into colours, and put each colour in one box! Maybe I’ll have to use only 1prim box – that’s one thing I’ve learn in this post!

About the ads, I was asking because I am in the process of doing new ads, so any suggestions would be nice :)

A demo is only viable if there’s prim/sculpt stuff in the box, I think! I am not much for demos, except for skins and hair, and sometimes shoes (I rarely try demos for shoes)! But maybe that’s just me!

Sorry for the long comment, and please, any suggestions for “how you prefer ads” are welcome! IM me, email me or drop me a notecard! Or plurk me… so many options :P

    January 9th, 2009 @ 16:03

    Angie Mornington → *hugs*

Dinalya → same her, same here but that happens (to me) with the skirts build with the LoopRez.

Nieve Thor → I prefer no transfer items but if I have a no copy item with a resizer script, I am happy. Nieve, IM me in-world. I have a pack with useful stuff. ;)

cat magellan → *nods* I have seen fashion posts that the look has accessories that don’t combine. Or pics taken in the worse angle possible (just to show the avie’s face). Some people don’t get that fashion blogging is about the clothes/accessories and not about our pretty faces.

Annah Whitfield → Makes sense. I prefer a fatpack with everything inside a box than two fatpacks but that always depends on the articles and it’s colours.

  27. Clio
    January 10th, 2009 @ 09:22

Yes, Annitah! I do the same for fatpacks, or the peopple will find themselves having a 50 items folder, and it can be a hard time to devide the single colours. So I have fatpack with each colour boxed inside, so they can unbox them one by one… I hate boxes myself, but this looks like the best way to sell so many things all at once!

And the vendor issue is something I’m interested in, too, cause I am now trying new styles, and to do something between 1 photo-vendor for each outfit, and hanging clothes (which also take long to load) I am going with posters ‘Blaze style’… all the colours in a large poster and you can buy each one by clicking on it…
Anyone has feedback for this kind of vendor style?

[and yes... skins with no pictures can be hard to manage!]

  28. Ana Lutetia
    January 10th, 2009 @ 15:44

Clio → Love the Blaze style and it makes all the sense. Speaking for myself, I need to see how the clothes look on a avie.
About fatpacks, I love what Truth (or Armidi) does. He makes one box with everything in it with a script. As soon as we click on the box, the script puts a folder in our inventory and the object says ‘you can delete me now’. That’s perfect! With a large pack, it happen to me that not all items end up in my inventory.

    January 13th, 2009 @ 23:08

:) Nice post. The folder thing stuck out for me. I haven’t given it much thought since I moved to my friend’s land, but not only is unpacking tedious it’s also damn annoying if you don’t have your own place. A lot of places don’t allow rezzing. My vendors give out folders, but maybe that’ll change in the future. I’ve been considering having them modded so they can give out both transfer and copy versions of an item, which I think would require it to be packed in a box.

I’m torn on resize scripts as well. I used some in my Benny the Bear, but haven’t added them since because I noticed they’re slightly less accurate than SL resize (mine are at least). And since a lot of my stuff is lined up so tightly, I can’t have prims move even the slightest.
I’m not sure a lot of designers would take you up on your request to keep prims with resizers mod. The point of resize script is in fact not so much to help customers as it is to prevent prims from being copied (by dropping a scanner script in). At least, that’s the reason I added mine to Benny. Granted, there’s no point in protecting sculpted prims that are part of an outfit. On their own, they’re useless to thieves.

  33. Ana Lutetia
    January 13th, 2009 @ 23:34

Anya Yalin → well, you can keep the sculpted mod and hide the sculpted map and a good solution would be making two sculptie attachments: one tinted greyish and other plain. But this solution sucks because even in 1.21 my WL presets were different from some designers and I kept seeing sculpties that wouldn’t match the texture of the outfit.

If you creating boxes, please add a script to create a folder on inventory on touch. Unfortunately, such script is no use for no copy items that will remain in the box and won’t get into the inventory folder.

  34. Annah Whitfield
    January 13th, 2009 @ 23:45

/me wonders how can I hide my sculpt maps? I see some people have them transparent, but I don’t know how! And since you spoke about it… do you know how!??!

  35. Anya Yalin
    January 14th, 2009 @ 00:05

Annah: In Photoshop, under Channels, click Create New Channel. That’s all there is to it. The map will look the same saved, but will show up transparent in SL.

Ana: I indeed hide my sculpt maps, but this still wouldn’t prevent people from copying a prim. I’ve heard there are scripts out there to copy mod sculpts. Including two differently tinted attachments would be the best option I suppose. I’ve stopped worrying so much about having my items stolen. It would break my heart if it happened, but hardly anyone knows me yet and if it does happen I’ll just have to file a complaint. I don’t want one potential thief ruining a product for everyone, so I’m going mod from now on as much as possible.

Anya Yalin → I like the option of two prims with different shades or one prim and a notecard explaining how to tint sculpties.

Annah Whitfield → this is what I have in a notecard in-world:

“Neural Blankes: the sculped prims do not do anything at all with alpha layers. so you take your sculpt map into PHotoshop/GIMP/whatever and add an alpha channel to it, then save as a 32bit .tga
    then upload the sculpt map.
you can be creative with the alpha map of course. Some people put their store logos, etc. (this is what I do with mine)”

Ana. I just got the prim skirt builder from your HQ. Gosh I love it. I don’t need to remember any single command ever. Yeah now I can continue creating my clothes. Thank you so much for the link.

I’ll IM you once i’m in world. I can’t wait to see the useful stuff from you because I know it will be good.

    Hi! My wish list:
please let me send something to all in my friend list. Ya know for example, Christmas cards. How hard can it be to say, add another little column with a another check box to select or not but to send something like a prim, or a note, or a invitation? Maybe a select all contacts, or bulk transfer.

OMG can we please have more ways to search inventory. It is hard to sort out different things like items that are transferable, that would be cool!

I know these have been addressed, but I gotta say it. MORE GROUPS PLEASE, NO system skirts, and YES pictures of the outfit in the folder with a LM if you want me to come back.

Great list btw and great post!

  40. Ana Lutetia
    January 16th, 2009 @ 18:34

Tesa Jewell → The Imprudence viewer has new ways to search inventory. As for the groups, I think 25 is just fine. It used to be 10… More than 25 would made more pressure on the database. Actually, I like pencil (system) skirts.
Agrees with you in the rest: pics and LMs. Also add your store to your profile picks and/or classifieds. And when setting up vendors make them to show in search.

You must have a thinner avie then mine, because I got a butt as big as a Sim in those skirts LMAO As for groups, it is better now with the SOM’s but, there are so many great designers that I would like to be a group member of and I can’t, I didn’t know that would have any impact on the database though, lord knows we don’t need that. Lastly, what Imprudence viewer? I will have to check into this, I am excited! I have been in RL a lot last few days guess I am behind.
