the mistery of the disappearing prims

Posted on November 8, 2008 by Ana Lutetia | 6 Comments

One of the things I have always loved about SL™ (and RL) is to take pictures. Second Life® has gave me the opportunity to improve my PhotoShop skills and made me search and learned new techniques. SL™ also helped me improve my English since English isn’t my first or second language but that’s not important now. Back on the subject… When I take pictures inSL I usually save large files to my hard drive and like to zoom on things to see the details. In the latest SL viewer there’s a bug that happens when you are using a poseball and zoom on a avatar, the prims suddenly disappear! My solution to this issue was downgrading the viewer to an earlier viewer where this wouldn’t happen. You can donwload the old SL versions in the Second Life Wiki: Old versions. I am using the 1.20 version and it’s working fine… except for the issue that Noam Sprocket posted here but since for me it has only happen with one item I am good. If you prefer to use a very very old version, you can also do it. You just have to follow the instructions that Jacek Antonelli posted here. This post is quite good for people with older computers that aren’t using the new features, like Windlight, and prefer a lighter versions of the Second Life® viewer.
And… don’t forget to vote on the jira issues:
VWR-8920 :: Moving the camera around, or zooming in on an avatar, some attachments ‘disappear’ from view
VWR-8935 :: Snapshot bigger than screen: not all prims are rendered in saved file
VWR-3162 :: WindLight: Objects, avatars, and water sometimes disappear after zooming camera

VWR-10156 :: In new viewer.. when laying on a bed with poseballs hair disappears for me and partner

8920 is replicated in 1.22 latest public nightly build. however if the object yoy are sitting on is plain textured without alfa the bug is going away.

I was having this problem in the Release Candidate Viewer, so I dropped back to the main viewer and have not installed the last update. FYI I am using Second Life 1.20.17

The latest RC (1.22) doesn’t have this issue or any major issue. I crashed a lot while opening a second inventory window but the latest version has that fixed.
